Our faithful missions contributors support the missions efforts of organizations from around our community to all the way on the other side of the globe. In addition to generously supporting our local missions and relief agencies in Porter and surrounding counties, our missions department supports ministries such as Hillcrest Children's Home for orphans in Arkansas; Mission of Mercy, which feeds and educates impoverished children in third world countries; an African center rescuing abused and abandoned women; and Global University, training thousands of students in 180 countries to be indigenous pastors throughout the world. Your continued support is welcomed and appreciated as we continue to see the fruit produced by your seeds of generosity. We frequently receive letters testifying to the results of the saving work your support is enabling these missionaries to conduct. Here are some of the ongoing activities of our Missions Department: Heartland had two successful annual events that raised several thousand dollars for our home missions efforts. The Bike Show and the Golf Outing both brought more than 60 registrants and several more workers and participants. The Bike Show included a ride followed by awards during a chili dinner. Our golfers got to enjoy a buffet following their best-ball tournament. Many people were awarded prizes, and all enjoyed the great weather and the shot at the $5000 hole! Maybe next year... When the mission team from HCC returned from their week long construction project in Lima, Peru, they had a new perspective on the prevalent need in that country. A few weeks before their trip, Peru suffered large scale devastation resulting from an 8.0 magnitude earthquake. Nearly a quarter million people are still without shelter of any kind, and all of their personal belongings are a total loss, along with their housing. After digging, moving boulders and construction materials all by hand, the Heartland team realized how overwhelming rebuilding this country will be. Pastor Phil had the inspiration to provide a Bobcat loader to aid in the clean-up and construction of thousands of homes and churches. Peru had lifted the tariff on shipments of relief goods for a brief time, so Heartland acted quickly. Within two weeks a used John Deere Skid Steer was acquired at a generously discounted price, and HCC raised in excess of $12,000 through contributing businesses and individuals. Heartland gathered together to pray the night before the equipment was shipped out to missionary Rich Ferguson by way of the Convoy of Hope relief organization. It was aptly named "NEHEMIAH" after the Biblical rebuilder of the walls of Jerusalem. |
